THE PATHFINDER NEWSLETTER

Hello!

Welcome to the May/June 2009 issue of THE PATHFINDER.

Do you remember when we wondered how we were going to use computers for anything other than word processing and an occasional e-mail?  I certainly do!

Today, like most of you, I use my computer for all things related to my consulting firm as well as a mobile office.  Recently my newly installed computer system crashed.  And after several very nervous days, and with the help of an outside recovery firm, all my data and files were recovered, reinstalled, backed up and I can breathe again!

Home health care companies have a history of slow adoption to newer technology.  The question today is not "if", but "when" technology will be completely intergrated throughout your organization.  With the number and type of outside reviews our agencies can potentially experience in the near future, we need to have strong internal documentation review processes and the ability to locate and send requested information to the auditing entity quickly.

In particular, each organization needs to ask itself if it is "RAC Ready".  To restate my comments from the last newsletter-

In preparation for potential RAC "automated" and "complex" reviews, providers need to
• educate all levels of their organization about the RAC program;
• proactively audit perceived organizational vulnerabilities and take corrective action;
• develop a plan and internal processes to respond to RAC medical records requests, reviews and determinations;
• know how to navigate the Medicare appeals process

I am happy to have our newsletter articles written again by Lynn Serra and Barbara Gray, both Senior Associates for Beth Carpenter and Associates.

In the second of a two-part series, Lynn Serra will bring us "up to speed" on ACHC, the newest accreditation organization.

And Barbara Gray writes the second of her two articles on Continuous Care services - a poorly understood hospice benefit.

As I close the day is cloudy with rain on the way (again!), but the grass, bushes and trees are happy!  Eventially the sun will come out and the temperature will rise...and then it will finally be summer!  I wish you bright sunny days, and the opportunity for long walks.

If we can provide you with any assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Best wishes,  Beth Carpenter

HOME HEALTHCARE ACCREDITATION FROM ACHC - PART 2
By Lynn Serra, Senior Associate

This is the second in a two part series about the Accreditation Commission for Health Care, Inc. (ACHC).

Last month, we covered the questions: How long does it take to become accredited?  How much does it cost?  So let's take a look at some of the specifics of ACHC processes and some suggestions they make.  I call it the ACHC Top 10 list.

CONTINUOUS CARE IN HOSPICE - PART TWO
By Barbara Gray, Senior Associate

Welcome to the next segment of our overview of the Medicare Continuous Care Benefit.  If you missed the April issue, you'll find it on our web site, www.bethcarpenterandassociates.com.

This month, we'll take a look at the expense management challenges of both Continuous Care and other options for patients who require a higher level of care to manage symptoms.  Finally, we'll give you a checklist of things to consider about your hospice and health care market as a precursor to introducing Continuous Care into your array of services.
