THE PATHFINDER NEWSLETTER

Hello!

Welcome to the June 2008 issue of THE PATHFINDER.

I am pleased this month to provide an article by Audrey Kinsella on home telehealth.  In this article Audrey not only looks back at the growth of home telehealth over the past 5 years, but forward as well to future opportunities for telehealth usage in relation to Payment for Performance (P4P) and partnerships  between home health and hospitals.

And, in mentioning the opportunity to partner with hospitals, I thought that you would enjoy reading a recent article authored by Elizabeth Hogue, Esq, "Post-Acute Providers are Not Vendors."  Elizabeth clearly states her position that it is inappropriate for hospitals and SNFs to restrict the activities of post-acute providers in their facilities who have received a patient referral or cared for the patient immediately prior to their admission to the institution.

I have truly enjoyed working side-by-side with Elizabeth Hogue in the past.  And I want to let you know that we have found another opportunity to work together.  Elizabeth Hogue, Esq and I are planning a tele-seminar for Tuesday, July 29 at 1P Eastern entitled "Selling Yourself Internally and Externally."  This tele-seminar is specifically for hospital-based agencies emphasizing some of the special issues that these agencies often confront.  The tele-seminar is sponsored by Wyatt Matas and will be available at no cost to hospital-based agencies who request the call-in information.  If you would like to attend the tele-seminar, e-mail your name, title, organization and e-mail address to bcarpenter@bethcarpenterandassociates.com.  Call-in instructions will be sent prior to the tele-seminar.

No sooner had I finished and sent out the May newsletter when CMS released the final rules for the revised hospice conditions of participation!  I'm sure I was not the only one startled by the announcement especially since it was so soon after resetting the deadline to May 27, 2009!  The national organizations are doing a wonderful job of educating on the new COPs.  And we are working with a number of clients on reviewing their policies, IDG agendas and work flows to be compliant with the new regulations by the deadline.  If we can assist you, please give us a call.

Sunny days, warm nights, the buzz of mosquitoes and the flash of lightning bugs at dusk, yummy s'mores - all signal that we are in the summer mode.  Just like the kids - I don't want to come in until the street lights come on!

If we can provide you with any assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Best wishes,  Beth Carpenter

ABOUT HOME TELEHEALTH: INROADS MADE TO DATE IN SERVICE DELIVERY
By Audrey Kinsella, Director
Home Telecaring Services, Inc

Home telehealthcare is one of the most rapidly developing service frontiers in healthcare delivery today.  Among its most sought after features: a range of telemonitoring devices and services helping to keep patients relatively well and reducing use of costly emergent and acute care services.  By regularly tracking co-morbid patients at home, telehealth systems can signal nurses for scheduling timely, targeted interventions to patients, as needed.

POST-ACUTE PROVIDERS ARE NOT VENDORS
By Elizabeth Hogue, Esq.

Some hospitals and skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) refer to post-acute providers as "vendors."  These may include, for example, a requirement for representatives of post-acute providers to sign in when they arrive at hospitals and SNFs to coordinate services in hospitals' Purchasing Departments.

On the contrary, post-acute providers such as home health agencies, home medical equipment (HME) companies, and private duty home care agencies are not "vendors" and should not be treated like "vendors."
