Case Studies

We have earned a reputation as a company that has deep industry experience and one that works closely with our clients to identify solutions that meet their business goals and strategic objectives.

Interim Leadership

Client Challenge: A faith-based hospital system needed assistance in determining the future of the three separate companies that composed its statewide, multi-site post-acute network.

Resolution: Ms. Carpenter served as the interim COO of all three entities in the post acute network. Beth Carpenter stabilized business operations of the home health agency, the hospice and the pharmacy. She remedied reporting and compliance deficiencies in the home care agency. Ms. Carpenter gained control of revenue and receivables for all three companies and developed strategic plans for the disposal, liquidation and restructuring the operations of all three businesses. Implementing the strategies for each entity as approved by the Board of Directors resulted in the sale of the home care agency and the pharmacy. The hospice, after restructuring, was retained as a post acute service line for the hospital system

Due Diligence

Client Challenge: A multi-state nursing home and rehabilitation chain requested an in depth due diligence for a potential purchase of an existing home health agency.

Resolution: Beth Carpenter and Associates performed a due diligence audit of all operational and clinical components of the multi-site agency. The final recommendation was to not purchase the home health agency due to clinical and human resources issues. This recommendation saved the nursing home and rehabilitation chain several million dollars.

(Since 1995, Beth Carpenter and Associates has performed over 70 due diligence audits on potential purchases for national, regional and start-up entities.)

Expert Witness

Client Challenge: A medical supply manufacturer/distributor and a specialty hospital association faced a lawsuit related to home health services.

Resolution: Ms. Carpenter assisted in preparing the attorneys for the depositions of all parties and was subsequently available to testify on industry regulations during the trial.

Feasibility Studies

Client Challenge: A faith based hospital system requested a feasibility study on the potential of establishing a hospice as part of their post acute services to the community.

Resolution: Beth Carpenter and Associates conducted a Hospice Feasibility study with the recommendation for the hospital system to go forward and establish a hospice. The Hospice Feasibility Report included detailed analysis on areas including competitive information, opinions of primary stakeholders, hospice industry information as well as an outline of the steps necessary to begin the process.

Cost Reduction/Profit Improvement

Client Challenge: The parent company of a home health entity needed assistance to improve the efficiency and profits for several of its agencies across the organization.

Resolution: Ms. Carpenter, working with agency leadership, developed a plan to improve profits through the reduction of medical supply cost by instituting a JIT inventory system, increased referrals through the implementation of a Central Intake Department and reducing the average number of visits/client by three through required adherence to care paths while simultaneously raising client satisfaction scores.

Compliance

Client Challenge: An under-performing home health company requested assistance in improving their clinical operations.

Resolution: Beth Carpenter and Associates surveyed and interviewed company employees to assess their level of expertise and knowledge of state and federal regulations and company policies and procedures. As a result, training programs were developed to assist new and existing employees in understanding and applying those skills within the work environment. Workflows were documented and revised to align with clinical expectations and regulation requirements.

Community Education Plan/Business Development Plan

Client Challenge: A regional health care provider felt that it were losing market share to competition in their market places.

Resolution: Beth Carpenter and Associates performed an analysis of the competition for each of their targeted market places, a SWOT analysis of the client locations and a review of their current community education plans/business development plans. Working with the leadership of each location, each individual market was examined for the opportunity to enlarge the client base. Local leadership, with the assistance of Beth Carpenter and Associates, developed business plans specific to each referral source category and specific to every targeted account within the category. The result was an overall increase of 10% in revenue in the targeted locations.

Billing and Collection Issues

Client Challenge: A full-service home health organization owned by a hospital was having difficulty with its billing and collection processes.

Resolution: Beth Carpenter and Associates mapped the existing workflow processes. Working with organization leadership, new workflow processes were developed to facilitate a streamlined approach to the documentation and handoff to the Billing Department. Billing personnel were trained on the new processes and procedures to ensure the implementation and success of the billing program.
